ProMedica Health System Laboratory Aide - Monroe Regional Hospital - Full Time Nights in Monroe, Michigan

ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital offers a broad range of inpatient and outpatient services in southern Michigan and Ohio. Under supervision and according to established policies and procedures and detailed instructions, performs a variety of duties such as: obtaining venous blood specimens, housekeeping tasks involved in maintaining the laboratory in a clean and orderly condition, distributing supplies and maintaining inventory, and utilizing in-house computer system and other computers within department.

ACCOUNTABILITIES (List the essential functions and responsibilities of the job. Provide concise descriptions of each accountability and the estimated percentage of time spent on each. This section should reflect primary, current and regular accountabilities of the position (not incidental or temporary). Should be no more than 8 key accountabilities.)

  1. Collects blood samples from neonatal, pediatric, and adult patients in the laboratory outpatient service area, laboratory area, nursing floors, or in the emergency room. Labels specimens and transports them to the laboratory for testing.
  2. Prepares 24-hour urine specimens as needed.
  3. Maintains inventory of supplies and notifies director or office supervisor when supplies are needed; reorders supplies when instructed by director; distributes to designated areas.

  4. Assists in charting and filing laboratory slips, answers the telephone, and assists in maintaining the laboratory in a clean and orderly condition.

  5. Utilizes hospital in-house computer system and other computers within department.

  6. Always follows standard precautions. Education: High school degree or equivalent, Skills: Completion of formal phlebotomy program or previous experience with ability to demonstrate phlebotomy skills prior to employment. The interpersonal skills and technical ability to interact and draw venous and capillary blood samples from patients of all ages including newborn and elderly. Basic keyboard and computer knowledge to utilize in-house computer system and other computers in the department. Years of Experience: One to three months on-the-job training is required to become familiar with department/hospital procedures.

WORKING CONDITIONS Personal Protective Equipment: Exposed to odors, infectious materials, toxins, and other hazardous substances.

Physical Demands: Physical ability to freely move -from one work area to another; to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time; occasionally lifts supplies (weighing up to 50 lbs.), binders, files, etc.; bend or stretch to store or retrieve filing, etc. As an essential job function, due to continuously changing patient census/activity and staffing needs, must have the flexibility to work a varying schedule should the need arise, which may require working a varying shift, overtime (greater than 8 hours worked hours in a day or 80 hours in a pay period) and/or shift durations that exceed the assigned status for shift length and/or hours per week.
